Building With Light
My brother and I were experimenting with long exposures and a flashlight. I think too much light came in, but you can see the buildings really well.
Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
Exposure: 30 sec (30)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 30 mm
ISO Speed: 1600
Exposure Bias: 0/2 EV
Flash: Flash did not fire

Well, flashlight and someone with more skill than I have in doing that. I’m still trying to figure out how he knew where he’d already drawn since he couldn’t see anything.
Cool effect! I love how the light is in focus and the background is blurred. I also like the perpendicular lines the light makes (it’s not all swirls). I really need to experiment with this.
I’ve seen this before and always wanted to try it! Do you have to be manually focused in order to do this?
Either way, great 1st attempt! I’m impressed with his drawing, too!
@Ryan Rahn: That’s why I picked this one too. I’ve seen way too many swirly ones. They’re cool, but you can only see so many before they start to look the same.
@Christine: Manual focus is the way to go. What I did was set the focus with the room light on, then backed it up a little so my brother would be blurry.
If you have it on auto focus you might have the camera not want to take the picture.
But the key is really the shutter speed. It needs to be slow enough so that the flashlight light has enough time to do it’s thing but fast enough so that you don’t have too much light coming in.

Was that done with only the flashlight?? Wow, that’s a real neat effect. I’ve not ever heard of trying to do that. Now I’m going to have to try it myself. LOL.
